In the beginning...

Location: Northshore & Sheerwoods, Hawaii

So Oahu has been storming this winter and amazingly yesterday the skies were clear and the sun was out. Unfortunately the red dirt managed to flow into the rivers leading into the ocean so the prestine north shore was not amazing. Not to mention the gloomy skies didn't exactly make Waimea inviting. It may look okay from the picture, but trust me, the water was brown. Only the hardcore surfers were willing to go out. The shockingly empty parking lot at the usually packed waimea beach was evidence.

Since this was a bummer, we decided to make the most of our losses and eat at Kua'aina's in Haleiwa. Even at the usually packed Kua'aina, we had our pick of seats, something I've never had the chance to do. It busy everyday, but I guess everyone got that news that North shore wasn't looking so hot - but us. I had an avocado burger with bacon (well worth the extra dollar, and yes I know how fat that sounds) and Jess had a bacon burger.

I've been going to Kua'aina since I was about four. My older cousins would take me to Haleiwa every weekend during the summer. The game plan was simple, beach, Kua'aina, and Matsumoto shave ice. Ono. That's one of the great things about Hawaii that is different from being in the city, tradition. Yes, I know San Francisco has great food joints that have been around for forever, but it seems like almost everything in Hawaii remains the same, untouched by time. You can go to the same burger place for 13 years and have the food taste as good as ever. Kua'aina's made my day, not to mention it was on my list of places to eat before I go back to SF.

Even though Haleiwa was a bust, we decided to go all the way to Hawaii kai side and get to Sheerwoods where the beach was nicer and the sun was out. Traffic is one thing I don't miss about our rock. After getting a little color, we went to Keneke's and got some ice cream. Must say, even though we didn't get to go to our usual spots, the food (as usual) made it all worth it.

All in all, I have to say it was a good day.

Ari
